Creating and sharing the tools and technologies to sustainably restore coral reefs worldwide.

Overview

The SECORE project is a global collaboration between many research and aquarium institutions, with the aim of protecting and restoring coral reefs around the world.

By synchronizing project SCUBA dives with annual coral spawning events, coral gametes are collected, settled in laboratory conditions, and replanted out onto protected vulnerable reefs.

The Deep has been involved with SECORE since 2016, having sent our coral biologists on six expeditions to field locations such as Curaçao and Guam.

Outcomes
  • Coral propagation research.
  • Rearing corals.
  • Monitoring fragile habitats.
  • In-situ management by out planting reared corals.
  • Habitat restoration.
