Overview

Beach cleans are a fantastic way to get involved in keeping your local coastline free of litter and protecting marine life.

Litter is fast becoming a huge problem for our beaches; in 2023 alone, 92% of inland cleans recorded plastic bottles and lids. You can help us change this by taking part in a beach clean.

These can be carried out at any time during the year, but many choose to take part in the Marine Conservation Society's Great British Beach Clean which runs every September. This year's event is taking place between Friday 20th - Sunday 29th September 2024. We will be hosting our own organised Beach Clean during this week at Hessle Foreshore; you can find more details on our What's On page soon!

During these cleans, each piece of litter collected is identified, weighed and recorded before being responsibly disposed of. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey as part of the Beachwatch National Beach Cleaning programme, which is used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment. It also adds weight to a campaign for legislation to reduce litter on beaches. Since carrying out these events, we have managed to collect over 1 ton of rubbish – that’s the equivalent of a car!

If you'd like to organise your own beach clean, we offer litter picking equipment available to borrow FREE of charge from Reception! More details can be found here.
