Investigating the geospatial use of Dungonab Bay, Sudan, by Manta rays.

Overview

The Red Sea witnessed groundbreaking conservation efforts for endangered Manta rays, led by The Deep and Equipe Cousteau. Scientists gathered data on Manta ray behavior, habitat, and population in Sudan's Dungonab Bay Marine Park for five years.

This research established vital baseline information for effective conservation strategies and sustainable ecotourism. Manta rays, essential to marine biodiversity, face threats from unregulated fishing and habitat destruction. The project, supported by advanced technology and partnerships with local institutions, sought to protect this iconic species and its ecosystem. The initiative reflects The Deep's commitment to marine conservation and honors Jacques Cousteau's legacy.

Collaboration with organizations like Red Sea University and King Abdullah University ensured a holistic approach to marine resource management. The site has since been designated a UNESCO marine national park.
