Deep Blue One

Deep Blue One is home to species which live in some of the greatest river systems of the world.

Descending through the rainbow tunnel from the Kingdom of Ice, you enter our Deep Blue One area.

Protecting the world's rivers is a vital part of conserving planet Earth. By understanding these habitats and the creatures living in them, we can change our behaviours to ensure their survival.

This area provides a home for many species, including snakes, frogs, fish, diving beetles, mantids and even Axolotls!

Amazon tree boa

Corallus hortulana

Amazon tree boas are well known for their highly variable colour and patterns. Their base colour varies from pale tan to black, with yellow and red tinges. Their eyes can be yellow, grey, or red and they have a reflective membrane that makes them shine at night!

Axolotl

Ambystoma mexicanum

Axolotls are almost extinct in their native habitat in Mexico, largely due to the introduction of predatory fishes in the lakes where they live and habitat loss. On top of being able to regenerate limbs, they can also rebuild their jaws, spines, and even brains without any scarring!

Amazon milk frog

Trachycephalus resinifictrix

Amazon milk frogs are light grey in colour with band patterning of black or brown. They have large toe pads that make them excellent climbers and they can hold up to 14 times their own body weight! The adults shed their skin around once a week, using their legs to peel off the old layer.

Red devil crab

Geosesarma hagen

Red devil crabs' small size helps them to squeeze in and around rock and debris. Unlike most crabs, they don't need to spend much time in water. They can normally be found climbing around the forest floor looking for insects to eat.
