Get close up to our colony of Gentoo penguins in the chilly Kingdom of Ice!

Home to Gentoo penguins, the Kingdom of Ice area offers the opportunity to feel what it is like to live in the cold Antarctica climate by touching our real ice walls.

Discover more about global warming, ocean acidification and food chains associated with the animals that survive in these colder environments.

With chances to view the penguins from different areas, you can enjoy watching them both above and below the water as they speedily swim and play!

Brian

Brian is the eldest penguin in The Deep’s colony at 15 years old! He is a fussy eater; his fish must be placed perfectly in front of him, or he will shake his head dramatically and waddle away! Brian's birthday is on 30th December and he wears a yellow and black band.

Lizzie

Lizzie is the female chick hatched from parents Leo and Diane, named in honour of HM Queen Elizabeth II. She's a pretty confident and inquisitive penguin who is also a huge foodie! Lizzie's birthday is 18 June and she wears a blue and pink band.

Attenborough

Attenborough is named after the well-known naturalist Sir David Attenborough. He's got a bit of a cheeky side; he is often caught eating chunks of ice from the penguin habitat! Attenborough's birthday is on 11 June and he wears a black and red band.

Lillian

Lillian is our youngest penguin in the colony! Hatched to parents Nessie and Stan, she is named after Hull-born British fisheries worker and 'Headscarf revolutionaries' campaigner, Lillian Bilocca. Lillian's birthday is on the 9th June and she wears a blue and white band.
