Red list assessments in action, a co-ordinated approach to conservation.

Overview

In November 2016, 35 experts from 13 countries, including The Deep's Marine Red List Officer, convened in Portugal to assess the status of 164 grouper and wrasse species globally, determining those at risk of extinction.

This reassessment, mandated every decade for at-risk species, marks a milestone in marine conservation. Led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with support from species specialist groups, the workshop focused on groupers, vital to reef ecosystems and human livelihoods. Growing exploitation threatens many species due to slow maturation and overfishing during spawning. Urgent action and better fisheries management are needed to ensure their survival.
