Supporting a coordinated approach to international penguin conservation.

Overview

The IUCN Penguin Specialist Group, with initial support from The Deep, has made progress in crafting the Global Penguin Conservation Strategy.

They identified the Yellow-eyed, African, and Galapagos penguins as priority species for conservation based on population trends and range. Additionally, they outlined twelve research and conservation needs, including marine spatial planning, species-specific action plans, and addressing the impact of micro-plastics. The next phase involved summarizing these priorities for the 10th International Penguin Congress in 2019.

Project Penguin, initiated by The Deep in 2014, has supported crucial conservation efforts. Funding has aided research on Galapagos penguins and helped rescue and rehabilitate African penguins in South Africa. The Deep's visitors have contributed to this cause through donations. This collaborative effort aims to stabilize penguin populations globally for the future.
